Anna Grasmick (Jacksonville, FL) |
| My father was in the Air Force from 1954 (the tail end of the Korean War) to 1974. He did many TDYs (mostly overseas), and served in Vietnam -- according to him, in Da Nang. Though I do not know what happened to him there, I consider my dad a hero for serving his country in troubled times. He even spent a year in Thule, Greenland. I love my dad (he died 8 January 1998), and look up to him even now. Thank you for honoring him. |

| My husband, Mel, loved his service as a Navigator in SAC and TAC from 1953 through 1990. His final tour of duty was as an historian in the Office of Air Force History. He was justifiably proud of his service and the friendships he enjoyed until his death on December 16, 2007. Our daughter Julie and I are very proud of him as a husband, father, and retired Lt Colonel in the Air Force. Additionally he had a Ph.D in History and wrote his dissertation on the Bombing of Dresden Reconsidered. BRAVO! |

He was a very fair and dedicated leader who, during the ensuing eighteen months became my close friend. We have kept in touch since including one reunion visit at his retirement home in Fairfield, CA. It was with great shock that the Christmas card I sent him this year was returned with the notation: Deceased. I have a need to express my condolences to his next of kin. Please help me! |

We went to Germany with the airlift forces and though too young to remember specifics, I always remember his "bearing". We learned to stand tall, handle what needed to be handled and be responsible citizens of this great country. Thanks Dad, we miss you. |

Charles Wegener
(Miami , FL)
|
| Tribute left by: |
Marty Wegener (Indialantic, FL) |
| Dad,
I would like to tell you that everything I am and have, every thing my children have, they owe to you. Your service during WWII and the 22 years in the USAAF/USAF is only part of what you did. Your example of taking care of your children and meeting your responsibilities, day after day, is what I remember. It is easy to concentrate on your WWII service flying B-17s and the time as a POW, but that is what you did before I was born. You were the greatest man I have ever known.

CPT Dion Francis, Jr. (Tahlequah, OK) |
| My father, Dion Francis, Sr., passed away recently after a long illness. He was proud of being an Air Force veteran. I remember his service and duty stations like Guam, Tinker and Offutt. It is interesting and sometimes very sobering to interpret the memories and conversations with him about his service from the position of adulthood and military service in a world that transitioned from the cold war to other concflicts. Thanks Dad for serving our country in that difficult and dangerous time. |

| When I was inelementary school every boy worth his salt could draw a picture of a jet airplane, knowing that somehow those planes and the people who built, flew and maintained them helped make our country great and free. My uncle Sammy was at Lowry AFB then and worked in avionics. He took me to my first baseball game, let me sit on the hood of his car and watch Sabre Jets take off and land, and gave me my first electronics book. That led me to a career in IT. He will always be a hero to me |
