Claudia Martin (Hagerstown, MD) |
| My father, Mack E. Gattis, is my Air Force Hero. After serving in WWII, he went to work for Eastern Airlines, but shortly after I was born in 1953 he re-enlisted. He was a soft spoken man with a sly sense of humor. His smile would make everyone around him smile, and when he was playing a joke he had a mischeivious twinkle in his eyes. Although short in stature, he was a giant in my eyes. He loved this country and he loved his family. I still miss him terribly. |

"Charlie" wanted more than anything to go overseas & be in the fight, but his mission was to help train ours' & our allies' fliers right here in the States. When WWII was over, he chose to continue serving his country & beloved Air Force. He epitomised the unsung heros who built the most formidable Air Force ever! Glory was never his; but his part in building this living legacy for us far outshines it! |

He volunteered proudly and gave everything in his heart to his country. Even today at age 90 when asked about his past, he begins his life story as a gunnery instructor in the Air Corps. He struggled seeing his students fly off to battle, but knew he was helping to preserve life for families left behind. He remains a true and proud American. |

|
| Tribute left by: |
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert Medley Gatewood (Albuquerque, NM) |
| My Uncle “MoJo” graduated USMA in January, 1943 (first class to graduate early for WWII duty). He flew B-26s in that war, dated beautiful girls, drove fast convertibles, and played lots of golf early in his 20 year career. I wanted to fly and do all that too. And with some luck, I became an AF fighter pilot in ‘64 and did all those other things too in a 24 year career. “MoJo,” who died way too early in ‘77 at Walter Reed Hospital, remains my original hero; and I shall honor and miss him—always. |
