Bennie Brashear
(Wichita Falls, TX)
|
| Tribute left by: |
Felicia Bills (Wichita Falls, TX) |
| Bennie is a hero because of his courage and the number of lives he has touched.
He had the courage to leave his hometown in Lake Charles, LA, which at that time, noone else in his family had done.
He spent 21+ years as military in the Air Force working Helicopters and teaching hundreds of students the correct maintenance of Aircraft as both military and federal civilian and always with a positive attitude.
Thinking of the number of lives he has touched makes Bennie my AF Hero.

|
| Tribute left by: |
rutha hise (pinehurst, GA) |
| 20 years service to our country in the Airforce and 20 years civilian @base in Warner Robins. The thing that stands out the most is his dedication to our country and his support to the troops now serving. The tears as he watches the news and a nod of understanding their feelings.
Bonds form between these people that is very hard for us who never served our country in a military branch.
He is a wonderful man with a great love for the service and his country. |

Lt Marc Herringshaw (Tinker AFB, OK) |
| My father has long been my hero for his tenacity, candor, and unwavering character. I would not be where I am today without his influence on my life.
As a Vietnam-era C-141 loadmaster, he encouraged my decision to continue that legacy and become an Air Force officer.
His post-AF career speaks for itself - successful businessman (27 years), cancer survivor (10 years), and friend - I am proud to call him DAD.
I love you, Dad! |

Her work ethic and drive to make the 310th Space Group family a better place were nothing short of heroic and she will always be the model of selflessness that I measure myself against. She was an outstanding officer, an amazing wife, and a wonderful friend. I am forever grateful to have shared in her much too short life of love and service to others.

| Tribute left by: |
MSgt Jason Rebholtz (Minneapolis, MN) |
| What does a hero look like? My hero comes in the unlikely form of a 5'4" strawberry blonde who turns out to have superwoman like powers. My hero is my wife Mary.
Mary is a respiratory therapist on a Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT). With over 40 missions on three OEF and OIF deployments she is a hero to many others as well.
It is impossible to put into words what she has meant to me. She is the mother of 4, my wife (no easy job), a veteran, my hero, and my best friend!

| Heros don’t have to be super strong or posses any special powers; in my eyes, heros are women like my wife. Currently serving our nation’s Armed Forces and full time mother is not for the faint hearted and easily timid. Dear, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for managing the household when I’m called away. No medal can suffice your dedication to country and family. Stay strong and keep your head-up. Love TSgt Vickram Rajpaul. |

| My dad. My hero. As 1 of 7 children, I
always knew he was there for me. Whether
stationed at Dover, Keesler or Lackland AFB
life was an adventure for us. When he served
overseas he always kept in touch. Today
I still have the air mail letters he sent
while station in Thailand. Everytime he
came home it seemed like Christmas. Little
did we realize that on those trips he was
putting his life on the line. Because of
my dad I am the strong independent person I
am today. My dad has been gone since 1993 &
I still miss him. They don't make men like
that anymore. Love You Dad.

| My father lived the AF values not only during his career but afterwards as well. Integrity First he shows to this day - always be true to your word!
He exemplified service before self by always volunteering, inviting airmen for holidays and standing beside his troops no matter what.
Excellence was evident in the work he and his shop did on a daily basis.
I treasure the lessons he teaches, and I'm proud of his service. He is a major reason that I proudly serve today.

He was a top turret gunner in the 8th AF,850th BS who was killed in action on June 19, 1944 during a mission into France. He and his crew aboard the "Noble Effort" crashed in the drop zone. John C. Silvia Jr.
(Wareham, MA)
|
| Tribute left by: |
John C. Silvia III (Camas, WA) |
| SMSgt. John C. Silvia Jr., USAF Retired
13 Aug 1934 – 21 Feb 2005
On President’s Day this year, in what seems like an appropriate finish to a life long service to both his nation and his community family and friends, the highly decorated SMSgt. John C. Silvia Jr. USAF Retired; heard his final rendition of “Taps” and was sent to a well earned position with the Lord almighty accompanied by the mournful melody of bagpipes from St. Peter’s on the Canal in Buzzards Bay Massachusetts and a grave side service at Agawam Cemetery in Wareham; complete with full military honors. SMSgt. Silvia was awarded in the service of his country the National Defense Service Medal with one device, Air Force Outstanding Unit ribbon with one device, Air Force and US Army Good Conduct Medals (USAF as a service was so young that by the first award of this medal for good conduct, there was not yet a Air Force specific Good Conduct Medal), Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, NCO Academy and Basic Military Training Ribbons, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four devices, aircraft crew chief wings and a “pocket rocket” are but a short list of his honors and accomplishments associated with his military service.
A longtime resident of Wareham Massachusetts, SMSgt. Silvia (Sylvia) served just under 22 years on active duty in the United States Air Force from early 1951 through 1972 performing duty in such distant locations as North Africa as an aircraft crew chief on DC-3’s, a power production technician on the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line “Texas Towers” and at RAF Kirknewton in Edinborough, Scotland as well as the republic of Vietnam at a number of non-disclosed locations; but principally Tan Son Nhat AB RVN as well as Kadena AFB Okinawa (924th CES). SMSgt. Silvia was ultimately stationed throughout his career at the CONUS bases F.E. Warren (missile maintenance and power production), Travis (60th CSE), Sheppard, Otis, and Norton (NCO Academy) and initially entered basic military training at the former Sampson AFB in New York.
Originally from New Bedford Massachusetts, the son of turn of the century Portuguese immigrants from the Azores; he entered service with out a high school diploma and upon retirement the “second time”, he had earned a Master’s Degree in Education and had been elected an honorary USAF Recruiter several times over owing to the number of students from the Easton Vocational School system he directly influenced to join the United States Air Force. SMSgt. Silvia passed away just days after learning that his youngest son John had been promoted to full Colonel in the “family business”; the same USAF he so treasured. SMSgt. Silvia was a sponsor of the Air Force Memorial, and a life long member of the Air Force Sergeants Association. SMSgt Silvia was formerly known as SYLVIA owing to an mistake on his birth certificate – he legally changed that after retirement from the United States Air Force.
He is survived and missed dearly by his wife Patty Holmes (Silvia), his son John C. Silvia III (colonel and Group Commander, 939th ARW Portland IAP, Oregon); his daughter Anne and her husband Michael Cote; their sons Nicholas, Jackson and Rafe; his older sister Mrs. Mary Boyle still of New Bedford and a host of other direct relatives and close friends who have been devastated by his passing. This soldier’s duty is done; he has PCS’d for the last time. The only damage recorded in this final “move” was the sheer devastation and painful hole left in the souls of those who knew him and now must go on with only his wonderful memory. Dad; I salute you.

| My husband Darold, is my hero. He has served in the Air Force for 23 years, 10 active duty and 13 years in the reserves. He has unselfish dedication to his country and great respect for his job and those who work along side him. He has a very kind heart and would do anything for anyone. He is a wonderful role model for our 2 children, who think the world of their father. I am proud to call him not only my husband, but my best friend. Thank you for all you do. |
